CHAPTER FIVE

It had been over a week since the children had moved in with Tom and Jean and things were running smoothly. The beautiful dark-haired mother was pleased that Paul and Linda had both adjusted so readily to their new home, and if she was disturbed by anything it was her own lack of emotional control. In spite of herself, she could not help feeling an ugly trace of jealousy for her son’s close relationship with Linda and their new friends. They were hardly ever home, preferring to spend all their time with Jerry and Cindy. She had promised herself that she would never be a nagging, overly-strict mother, yet she could not help being hurt by the fact that her son spent so little time with her after three years separation.

She had tried to speak with Tom about it, but he insisted that all teenagers were more interested in their friends than their parents and pointed to himself and his relationship with his daughter Linda, as reference. “I’d start to worry if she were hanging around the house all day, and so would you, if you stop to think of it that way.”

Jean had to agree that he was right, and she hated herself for being selfish, but at the same time she was able to console herself with the rationalization that a mother’s relationship with her son was something a man could never understand, no man, not even her husband.

Another problem marring her complete happiness was sex with her husband. She had been unable to truly enjoy sex with Tom in the outgoing, free and easy manner he had tried to teach her. It was bothering her because she wondered if it was because of the children being with them. Tom had pointed out that she had been required to make a lot of emotional adjustments in the last few months and that she mustn’t be too hard on herself. “All things worth having take time,” he said, and as usual, Jean knew he was right. Still, she could feel him growing impatient with her to solve her problem and her reaction was to grow even more cool towards him.

Jean was alone in the house fixing sandwiches for lunch while Tom and the kids were out on the lake. She mentally scolded herself for being a jealous mother and tried to look forward to meeting the children’s new friends who were expected to come by that afternoon. Jean wondered why they elected to spend all their time at Jerry and Cindy Walters’ house instead of their own and Tom and laughingly explained that it was probably because of the Walters’ swimming pool.

Tom and Paul came into the house together, talking enthusiastically about a fishing trip they were planning. They both gave Jean perfunctory kisses and went on with their conversation. Linda followed close behind looking cheerfully excited about something and they all sat down to lunch.

The men continued their discussion during the meal, but Jean and Linda were silent.
